Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin Q&A

How does Botox work?

An injectable serum, Botox temporarily improves the appearance of frown lines that form between the brows, forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. The Botox formula contains a highly purified botulinum toxin that stops specific facial muscles from contracting.

When you talk, laugh, or make expressions, the muscles in your face move. Over time, the repetitive contractions cause the skin above your muscles to fold and crease, leading to wrinkles and deep lines.

Botox prevents these movements, allowing your skin to stay smooth, giving you a more youthful appearance.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

When you see Dr. Carretero or Maggie for Botox treatments, they may ask you to make exaggerated facial expressions. Doing so allows them to see where your muscles crease and fold and determine the optimal placement for the injections. They may mark these areas.

Your injection specialist then prepares your Botox treatment. Depending on what areas they’re addressing, they administer 3-7 injections into your muscles.

Once these injections are done, you’re free to go without restrictions or downtime. From beginning to end, the procedure takes about 10 minutes. Optimal benefits occur in about 2 weeks and can last up to four months.

What are XeominⓇ and DysportⓇ?

Like Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are injectable serums that use a neurotoxin to stop muscle movement underneath the skin that results in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Both are specially designed to smooth the glabellar lines that form between your brows, often in an “11” or “M” shape.

These serums still allow for natural facial movements and expressions, and they don’t create a frozen or unnatural appearance. Like Botox, these procedures typically take 10-20 minutes, and you may notice results in as early as 2-4 days. In most cases, the benefits of Xeomin and Dysport last 3-4 months.
